WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS. NETHERLANDS. The Assassination of the Brothers Johann and Cornelius de Witt, Silver Medal, 1672, by Pieter Avry or Aury, conjoined busts right, rev legend in eight lines, "Twee Witten, eensgezint, ...", floral and vine sprays above and below, lettered edge with date, VIOENTA MORTE DELETI HAGÆ COMITIS 20 AVG: A'O 1672, 48.5mm (vL III, 87, 3; Molinari 323; cf BDM VII, 34). Extremely fine with light tone.
Johann de Witt (1625-1672); Cornelius de Witt (1623-1672). Forrer [BDM] writing of the larger signed medal for the same event, suggests that the medallist may be the sculptor Pieter Xavery (born c.1647, active 1667-1674), "who did not wish to disclose his name in connection with the execution of this medal". Scher, The Proud Republic, simply states it may be a pseudonym.
Estimate: £250-350
