J. W. Gilbart was banker and author of works on banking. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1846 and commerce including A Practical Treatise of Banking and History and Principles of Banking. Gilbart was the first manager of the London and Westminster Bank (1833-1859), the first joint-stock banks in England, opening its first branch in Westminster on 10 March 1834.
