HMS Lion was flagship for the First Battle Cruiser Squadron, the 'Splendid Cats'. At the Battle of Heliogoland Bight she sank the German cruiser Köln; at Dogger Bank and Jutland, she was the flagship of Admiral Sir David Beatty and was first to open fire at the latter encounter
