EL SALVADOR. El Salvador - Peru. Real, ND (1868). PCGS GOOD-6; Countermark: VF Details.
cf. KM-53. Issued by Decree of 28 September 1868. Type V Countermark, arms of El Salvador within dentilated circular boarder. On a 1808-LIMA JP Peru bust 1 Real of Charles IIII(IV). A SCARCE host, this example displays heavy circulation with minor marks and abrasions that one would associate with designated grade with a boldly applied countermark. Attractive mottled gray patina with areas of richer coloration amongst the devices adding to its pleasing appearance.

According to the above stated decree all heavily worn coins were to be countermarked to distinguish the good silver from the debased Spanish provincial coinage.

Estimate: $125 - $175
