GERMANY. Cologne (Koln). Cologne Cathedral (Kolner Dom) Bronze Medal, ND (1848). Geerts (Ixelles) Mint. NGC MS-63 Brown.
Ross-M50 (R1); van Hoydonck-47; Reinecke-25.By J. Wiener. Diameter: 59mm. Obverse: Exterior view of the cathedral from the south-southeast; Reverse: Exterior view of the cathedral from the south-southeast; early stages of the recently restarted construction with no structure visible above the main arcade level between the western facade towers and the choir area east of the transept. Deep brown surfaces, with some enticing brilliance remaining in the fields.
Owing to its contemporary construction while Wiener was producing this series, the Cologne medal exists in numerous varieties presenting different stages of construction. Though the crane on the left is seemingly ubiquitous, the amount of completion on the rest of the edifice can be observed over the many varieties.
Estimate: $300 - $500
