HAITI. France - Haiti. President Alexandre Petion Bronze Medal, 1821. Paris Mint. NGC Unc Details--Reverse Damage.
Revue Belge vol. 38, p. 646 & pl. XXIII, 1. By Masson. Diameter: 40mm. Obverse: Head left; Reverse: Legend and date in nine lines. Charming red-brown surfaces, with some alluring brilliance in the fields. An immensely impressive medal, this piece features a bust of the Haitian president in high relief, with a planchet that is also rather thick. An EXTREMELY RARE medal, with this cataloger able to locate just one other instance of this type being mentioned, that in the Revue Belge de numismatique et de sigillographie from 1882 (vol. 38), in which it is listed under "Quelques curiosities numismatiques" (some numismatic curiosities), where it is mentioned as unknown at that time and the specimen in question emanating from Henri Heylaerts, the consul of Haiti at Brussels. Interestingly, the present example is given a details designation on account of reverse damage. Though there is what appears to be a blow to the surfaces near the lower right portion of the reverse legend, it has the look of being in the die rather than on the surface itself, which appears to match the manner in which the consul's example was described: "Quelques eraillures qui se trouverent dans le coin ont ete reproduites dans le frappe, ce qui fait supposer qui s'il s'en rencontre d'autres exemplaires, il doit y en avoir bein peu, et ce par force majeure." Overall, a great piece of Latin American medallic art.

Estimate: $140 - $200
