ITALY. Venice. Basilica of St. Mark Bronze Medal, ND (1854). Geerts (Ixelles) Mint. NGC MS-62 Red Brown.
Ross-M145 (R1); van Hoydonck-65; Reinecke-52. By J. Wiener. Diameter: 59mm. Obverse: Exterior view of the basilica from the southwest; Reverse: Interior view with a sightline down the nave, from an eyepoint located west of the choir and to the right side of the central aisle. Great, intricate detail, as is the calling card for the medals from this popular series. Charming red-brown surfaces, with some remaining brilliance in the protected areas. With earlier forms of the structure falling victim to fire--a typical culprit in the destruction of churches--St. Mark's, a mix of Italo-Byzantine and Gothic, was rebuilt multiple times, with the current edifice being consecrated in 1117.
Estimate: $300 - $500
