SWEDEN. Titles & Abbreviations Explanatory Silver Medal, ND (1745-60). PCGS SPECIMEN-66.
Hildebrand II, p. 548. Regents of Sweden series. Diameter: 34mm. Obverse: Three coats-of-arms and three crowns alternating around central radiant star; Reverse: Legend in seven lines explaining the various abbreviations used on the reverses of the issues contained within the ensuing series: F--FILIVS (son); f--FRATER (brother); N--NEPOS (grandson); E--ELECTVS (elected); C--CORONATVS (crowned); M--MORS NATVRALIS (died a natural death); m--VIOLENTA (died a violent death). Highly lustrous and brilliant, this enticingly toned specimen, offering olive-champagne hues on the obverse, serves as the initial medal in Hedlinger's expansive series of biographical medals for the regents of Sweden. This medal presents explanations to the various abbreviations used on the reverses throughout the series.

Swiss-born Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691-1771) was trained in Paris and later became the court medalist in Stockholm, where he produced numerous historical medals on commission. His portraits are often viewed as some of the most elegant and well-known, and he contributed greatly to his series of "Regentlängd," or "regent lengths,"--a series that provided portraits and brief biographies of the Swedish monarchs from Björn paring; Håga through Fredrik I.

Estimate: $300 - $500
