PB Seal of Michael Bourtzes, magistros, vestes and strategos of the Anatolikoi (c. 1056 AD).
Obv: Inscription of five lines: Κ(ύρι)ε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Μ[ι]χαὴλ μαγίστρῳ.
Rev: Inscription of five lines: βέστῃ (καὶ) στρατηγῷ τῶν Ἀνατολικ(ῶν) τῷ Βούρτζῃ.
Translation: Lord, help your servant Michael Bourtzes, magistros, vestes and strategos of the Anatolikoi.
The Bourtzes family is an aristocratic family of the Byzantine Empire, mainly active between the tenth century and the eleventh century. In 1056, having become a vestarch, Michel Bourtzes was one of the leaders of the army who came to demand promotion from the new Emperor Michael VI. There is only one similar specimen of this seal in the Zacos Collection. Cheynet, "La famille Bourtzès," no. 8.
