ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Saltuquids. 'Izz al-Din Saltuq, AH 523-563 / AD 1129-1168. Fals (Bronze, 23 mm, 5.50 g, 3 h), Erzurum (Theodosiopolis), circa AH 529-547 = AD 1134-1153. Byzantine style standing figure facing on the left, wearing crown and chlamys; on the right Byzantine style military Saint (St. Demetrios), standing facing on the right, holding sword in his left hand; both holding between them patriarchal cross set up on three steps. Rev. Arabic inscription mentioning the title and the ancestor of Izz al-Din Saltuq. Album 1890. A fine and clear example of this rarely encountered type. Very fine.
