CAMPANIA. Cales. Circa 265-240 BC. Litra (Bronze, 19 mm, 6.82 g, 7 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. CALENO Cock standing right; behind, star. HGC 1, 375. HN III 435. SNG ANS 188-99. Scarce and with dark brown patina. Somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

Coins with the almost identical Athena/Cock design were struck by several cities in the Northern Campania and Southern Latium regions (Aquinum, Caiatia, Cales, Suessa Aurunca, Teanum Sidicinum, Telesia). Some coins of this type from Cales were overstruck on Neapolitan coins, which in turn can be dated to 'after 269 BC'.
