SICILY. Leontini. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28.00 mm, 17.12 g, 5 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΛEO-NTIN-ON Head of a lion with open jaws and tongue protruding to right; around, four barley grains. Gillet 447. Weber 1382 (both from these dies). Boehringer pl. 12, 52 var (from the same obverse die, but reverse facing left). HGC 2, 669 var (same). Rizzo pl. XXIII, 21 var (same). SNG ANS 237 var (same). SNG Lloyd 1059 var (same). Well centered and of pleasing classical style. A few small marks, otherwise, very fine.

While the obverse die is found quite regularly in auctions and numismatic literature, the right-facing reverse die of our Leontini Tetradrachm is exceptionally rare, with fine examples previously in the Gillet and Weber collections. See Numismatica Ars Classica 125, 23 June 2021, 276 for Gillet (CHF 11,000), and Classical Numismatics Group 111, 29 May 2019, 64 for Weber (USD 9,000).
