SICILY. Messana. 420-413 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.00 mm, 17.05 g, 9 h). The nymph Messana, wearing a long chiton and holding the reins in both hands, driving a biga of mules walking to left; in exergue, two dolphins snout to snout. Rev. MEΣΣANIΩN Hare springing left; above, dove alighting left; below, grain ear to left. Cf. Caltabiano 614-5 (D220/R-; reverse die not recorded). HGC 2, 800. SNG ANS 378 (same obverse die). SNG Copenhagen 404 (same obverse die). Jameson 657 (same obverse die). SNG Lloyd 1104-1105 (same obverse die). Rare. Light die wear, otherwise, very fine.
The reverse die of our coin is unrecorded in Caltabiano and not often seen in auctions, but a specimen from the same obverse and reverse dies was sold in Triton VII, 12 January 2004, 72.
