THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Uncertain. 5th-4th century BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.45 g, 8 h), Maroneia(?). Facing gorgoneion. Rev. Kantharos in incuse square with dotted borders. Klein -. Rosen -. SNG ANS -. Cf. Tzamalis 58/50 (obverse/reverse). Toned. Light porosity, otherwise, very fine.
From the Vineyard Collection, acquired in November 2002.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
