EUBOIA. Chalkis. Circa 338-308 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 3.29 g, 12 h). Head of the nymph Chalkis to left, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. XAΛ Eagle flying upwards with open wings, pecking at snake held in its talons; on the upper right field, barely seen here, star. Agrinion -. BCD Euboia 146 (this obverse die). Picard Em. 11 (dies 3/e). A very rare drachm of Chalkis, of particularly fine -and atypical- style. Nearly very fine.

The artist who created the dies that struck this coin and produced this elegant and serene portrait of the nymph Chalkis, should be recognised as the same person, who a few years earlier produced the dies for the magnificent series of tetradrachms of the Euboian League (see f.i. Nomos 24 lot 96).
