Numerian, as Caesar, 282-283. Antoninianus (Bronze, 21 mm, 4.22 g, 5 h), Rome, 6th officina (ς). M AVR NVMERIANVS NOB C Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Numerian to right. Rev. PRINCIPI IVVENTVT / KAς Numerian, in military dress, standing left, holding globe in right hand and long scepter in left. RIC 363. An attractive and sharp portrait of Numerian. Extremely fine.
From the Trausnitz collection.
The style of engraving from various late Roman mints is quite varied and distinct. Here the portrait of Numerian is exceptonally fine. It seems the engraver went to lengths to carefully highlight Numerian's bangs, suggesting that they may have been intentionally curled. Of course it is doubtful whether the engraver ever saw the young emperor; perhaps he was simply illustrating a popular hairstyle of the time.
