The Pharos lighthouse located in the harbor at Alexandria was originally built during the reign of Ptolemy II (285-246 BC) and is estimated to have been at least 100 meters in height. Because of its enormous size, it was counted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was partially destroyed by earthquakes in the 10th and 14th centuries, and the last of its stones were used in the construction of the Citadel of Qaitbay under the Mamluks.
