Danishmendids, Shams al-Din Isma'il Æ Dirhem. No mint, undated. Name and titles in three lines within dotted border / Male figure seated facing on an arch-shaped throne within dotted circle; continuations of titles in outer margins. Album 1247; Whelan pl. 17, 12B. 12.41g, 31mm, 5h.

Extremely Fine; area of weakness, clear detailing of pantaloons. Very Rare.

The Danishmendids were a turkoman local dynasty whose origins are obscure and steeped in legendary flavour. They established a rule in central and Eastern Anatolia centred originally around Sivas, Tokat, and Niksar, following the demise of Byzantine power in Asia Minor after the disastrous defeat in the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. This coin type was based on a billon type struck by Alexius Comnenus after his coinage reform in 1092 (cf. Sear 1918).
