Antoninus Pius Æ Drachm of Alexandria, Egypt. Dated RY 13 = AD 149/50. ΑVΤ Κ Τ ΑΙΛ ΑΔΡ ΑΝΤѠΝΙΝΟϹ ϹЄΒ ЄVϹ, laureate and draped bust to right / Nilus reclining to left, holding reed and cornucopiae; crocodile below, L ΤΡΙϹΚΑΙ (date) and IϚ (16 cubits) above. RPC IV.4 Online 13670 (temporary); Dattari (Savio) 8642 and suppl. pl. 17, 99; Emmett 1621. 20.41g, 32mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare; one cited by RPC Online, two in Dattari.

On this example, the regnal year of the emperor is written in full as opposed to being expressed as numeral letters: L ΤΡΙϹΚΑΙ(ΔЄKA) [Thirteenth] rather than L IΓ. This is presumably to distinguish the regnal year from the numeral letters above the reed held by Nilus. The numeral letters IϚ (16) are found accompanying the regnal dates of various emperors on the Roman provincial coinage of Alexandria. It is believed that the letters indicate 16 cubits - the optimal flood level height of the Nile during inundation season.
