Cyprus, sovereign, 1966, medallic issue, Archbishop Makarios fund, bust l., rev. double headed eagle (4), all certified and graded by NGC, one as Proof 63, two as Proof 62, the last as Proof 61 (4)
These sovereigns were struck at the French State Mint in Paris and were offered for sale on 6 June 1966. The obverse shows the Archbishop Makarios, while the reverse features the double headed eagle, the emblem of the Byzantine emperors, which was later adopted by the Church of Cyprus. Both sides are the design of the Greek sculptor Basil Philiares. The project was financed by the Cypriot benefactor Mr Leventis. The fund was set up after Makarios visited the Seychelles and saw the financial difficulties of the less privileged children at the fee paying Seychelles College. They issued the design in five pound, sovereign, and half sovereign sized coins.
(1400-1600 GBP)
