Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Subaeratus, 17 mm, 2.42 g, 2 h), a contemporary plated imitation, irregular mint. CAESA[R] Elephant walking right, trampling on horned serpent. Rev. Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis with wolf's head at the top, and apex. Cf. Babelon (Julia) 9, Cohen 49, Crawford 443/1, RBW 1557 and Sydenham 1006 (for prototype). Breaks in plating on the obverse, otherwise, about very fine.
