BYZANTINE. 4th-6th centuries. Weight of 1 Nomisma (Bronze, 21 mm, 4.11 g), a circular weight made from a Provincial issue of Commodus (177-192) from Parium. Blank except for four radiating incuse lines. Rev. DEO AESC SVB Asclepius seated right on throne, examining raised foreleg of bull standing left. Cf. RPC IV.2 online 3164. Some scratches, otherwise, very fine.
This highly interesting Byzantine coin weight was produced from a provincial issue from Parium in Mysia showing Asclepius examining the foreleg of a bull. We can say for certain that the erased obverse once showed Commodus as the reverse was struck from a die of that emperor (see Savoca 6th Blue Auction, 7 April 2018, 635).
