ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 148-90/80 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 16.54 g, 11 h), struck under Aesillas (?), quaestor, circa 95-70 BC. Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing tainia and wreath of ivy and fruit. Rev. HΡAKΛEOΥΣ - ΣΩTHΡOΣ / ΘAΣIΩN Herakles standing front, head to left, holding club in his right hand and with lion's skin draped over his left arm and quiver over his shoulder; in inner left field, monogram of Aesillas (?). HGC 6, 359. Lukanc pl. 169, 1928. Prokopov Group XII, 571 (V AA2/R 468). Very rare. Very light doubling on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

Ex Gorny & Mosch 269, 9 March 2020, 206.

It has been suggested that the monogram on the reverse of this very rare issue is that of the Roman quaestor, Aesillas.
