Johannes, usurper, 423-425. Nummus (Bronze, 13 mm, 1.04 g, 12 h), Rome. D N JOHANNES P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Johannes to right. Rev. SALVS REI PVBLICE / RM Victory advancing left, holding wreath in her right hand and dragging captive with her left; in field to left, staurogram. RIC 1916. Well struck and exceptionally complete, with fully readable legends. Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Adrian Lang.

Most surviving nummi of Johannes were struck on tiny, crudely made flans, with the legends mostly off flan, leading nummi of Valentinian III to be commonly misattributed to the more popular (and more valued) Johannes. It is very unusual to find a nummus of Johannes with legends as complete as those on our example, allowing a full reading of both the obverse and the reverse. Due to its tiny size, it may not look like an impressive coin at first glance, but it certainly is exceptional.
