Israel. The Theodore Herzl Award: A 14K Yellow Gold Medal Presented to George Meany by the Zionist Organization of America, June 6, 1978. This engraved 14K yellow gold medal (45 mm, 61 grams) is considered as one of the highest honors within the Zionist movement. It was created in 1958, to be given to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the Zionist cause. Honorees have included Israel President Izhak Ben-Zvi; the Earl of Balfour, and Sir Winston Churchill. The obverse features a handsome high relief polished portrait of Herzl contrasting with a matte field, surrounded by the name of the award and the organization presenting it; the reverse has the Hebrew translation of the obverse legend, with the following inscribed on a polished field in the center: TO GEORGE MEANY FAITHFUL FRIEND OF ISRAEL FOR HIS DEVOTION TO AMERICA AND ITS LABOR MOVEMENT / FOR HIS SUPPORT OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE'S STRUGGLE TO REESTABLISH THE JEWISH STATE, AND FOR HIS AID IN DEFENDING ISRAEL AGAINST THE ENEMIES OF DEMOCRACY / WASHINGTON D.C.
