Israel. The Joseph Human Rights Award Presented by the Anti-Defamation League to Barbara Jordan, October 22, 1993. Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was an American lawyer, educator and politician who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Lot consists of two medals in presentation case. One medal is 59mm, 170gm, silver, with mirrorlike surfaces, engraved: "Joseph Prize/for Human Rights/to/BARBARA JORDAN/Anti-Defamation League/of B'nai B'rith/on behalf of/The Joseph Foundation/in memory of/I.S. and Anna K. Joseph/October 22, 1993/Detroit, Michigan." A couple of faint marks don't distract. The other is an Israel State Medal commemorating Masada. It is also 59mm, 115gm, edge marked .935 Silver, issued by the Israel Government Coins & Medals Corp. in 1977. It has a minor edge dent on obverse at 6:30. Previous winners of this award include African American civil rights leaders Roy Wilkins and Bayard Russin, as well as Golda Meir, Elie Wiesel, et al. An important memento of African American and Jewish American history. Estimated Value $300 - 500
