Charles II (1660-1685), Crown, 1664 XVI, on a small flan, second bust right, 'crooked' ties curving outwards, rev. crowned shields cruciform, seven strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 29.57g, 6h (Bull 363a but incorrect regnal year given and seven strings not noted; ESC 28; Spink 3355), scratch before nose and flaw by FRA, rubbed and with striking softness below date, otherwise darker tone, a pleasantly bold fine.
Bull notes that there are many small variations of tie, and indeed on page 49 he illustrates four for the date 1662, but he correctly chooses not to give these separate numbers in his listing. For the 1664 he distinguishes two main types of tie, which he describes as 'twisted' and 'crooked', and he has decided these are different enough to justify their own numbers. Bull 362 has the 'twisted' tie and Bull 363a has the 'crooked' tie. He gives the first for 1664 XVI and the second for 1664 XV. This second regnal year is an error and should also read XVI. (This simple error has led to some imaginative cataloguing in recent months! - cf. Spink, Summer Auction, 7 July 2021, lot 220)
,
ESC does not make such a distinction. The second bust is described simply as 'smaller than last and with curving tie to wreath.' There is a footnote which explains that the many small variations for both 1662 and 1664 are 'not sufficient to warrant their inclusion as major varieties'. All the 1664 currency Crowns are therefore ESC 28.
Estimate: £140.00 - £200.00
