William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, London, Crowns, 1696 over 5 OCTAVO (2), first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, "E over R" in DEI, rev. crowned shields cruciform, eight strings to harp, nine billets, lettered edge downwards, 28.98g, 6h (Bull 999; ESC -), a love token, IG 1796 engraved in script on reverse, the coin otherwise mediocre and heavily worn, the variety questionable but visible; another, similar, rev. seven strings to harp, nine billets, lettered edge downwards, 29.09g, 6h (Bull 998 [R3]; ESC 90), good, toned, rare (2).
The error in the obverse legend is not listed in ESC. Bull 999 notes the error, but presumably he has not seen an example as he does not give the number of billets, nor does he make a guess at the rarity.
Estimate: £100.00 - £150.00
