William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, London, Crowns, 1696 OCTAVO (7), first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right (3), rev. six strings to harp, nine billets, lettered edge upwards, 29.81g, 6h (Bull 995; ESC 89), removed from a brooch mount with resultant damage, otherwise toned, a bolder fine; another, heavily double-struck and turned in the die, 28.50g, 6h (Bull 995; ESC 89), a remarkable mint error, heavily circulated but rather desirable for the Great Recoinage; another, six strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 29.43g, 6h (Bull 995; ESC 89; Spink 3470); also, third bust (4), seven strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 29.93g, 6h; 28.59g, 5h; 29.22g, 5h (Bull 1004; ESC 94), the first lightly cleaned and toned, but scored across hair, fine or marginally better, the second rubbed and cleaned, virtually flat, mediocre; the third slightly off-struck, otherwise good / poor; another, no stops on obverse, rev. seven strings to harp, 29.04g, 5h, (Bull 1005; ESC 94; Spink 3472), polished with flecking, about good, but rare (7).
