William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, London, Crowns, 1700 (3) DVODECIMO, third laureate, draped and cuirassed bust variety right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, eight strings to harp, seven billets, lettered edge downwards, 29.82g, 6h (Bull 1010; ESC 97), lightly cleaned but residually lustrous, a bolder fine; additionally, DECIMO TERTIO (3), rev. nine strings to harp, eight billets, lettered edge downwards, 29.76g, 5h (Bull -; ESC 98-R; Spink 3474), a superficial graffiti mark in second quarter, but no trace of the edge error, rubbed and residually lustrous and toned, fine; lastly, D of DECIMO over another letter (a backwards D?), rev. eight strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 29.63g, 6h (Bull 1011; ESC -; Spink 3474), a small bruise at 12 o'clock, rubbed but evenly toned, fair, presumably very rare (3).
Bull 1011 notes the error edge, but that is the only listing for the 1700 DECIMO TERTIO, which means all must have the error edge. The first of the two examples here clearly does not have the error. Comparatively ESC does not list the error edge, but Bull describes it as a backwards D. The third coi offered here clearly displays the variety, but it is difficult to guess at the rarity of this variety, but presumably it is rarer than the date without the error.
Estimate: £240.00 - £300.00
