William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, London, Shillings (12), 1695, first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, nine billets, edge obliquely milled, 5.83g, 7h, rubbed, fine; another, six strings to harp, nine billets, 5.27g, 7h (Bull 1103; ESC 1077), heavily corroded and waterworn from shipwreck salvage, poor; also, 1696 (5), inverted A in GVLIELMVS, similar, rev. six strings to harp, nine billets, 5.77g, 6h (Bull 1109 [R4]; ESC 1080A), heavily double-struck, with graffiti in first quarter and scratches across French shield, fair, the variety apparent but not conclusive, presumed rare thus; another, similar, rev R over E in REX, five strings, nine billets, 5.99g, 6h (Bull -; ESC -; Spink 3497), the variety unlisted by Rayner or Bull, but compelling, adjustment by date, flecked and granular surfaces, toned, good fine, presumably extremely rare; another, six strings to harp, nine billets, 5.89g, 6h (ESC 1078), flan flaw at 4 o'clock, and adjustment in first quarter, lightly cleaned, good; also, four strings, nine strings to harp, 5.55g, 6h; and, six strings to harp, nine billets, 5.34g, 6h (Bull 1104; ESC 1078), both pitted, one scuffed on reverse, the other flawed in fourth quarter, poor to fair; additionally, 1697 (5), first bust, rev. six strings to harp, 5.95g, 6h, rubbed and toned, good / fair; 5.80g, 6h, scuffed and flat, poor; four strings to harp, eight billets, 5.73g, 6h (Bull 1117; ESC 1091), drilled for suspension, heavily scuffed, about good; also, similar, rev. no stops on reverse, 5.68g, 6h (Bull 1122; ESC 1092), scratch before chin, otherwise rubbed, good to fair, the variety clear; lastly, E of DEI over A [?], rev. five strings to harp, eight billets, 5.74g, 6h (Bull 1124 [R3]; ESC 1094A; Spink 3497), harshly scrubbed and pitted, evidently sea salvage, the variety rather inconclusive, struck details fine; an interesting academic group of the Tower Mint charting the complexity of the first bust issues for the Great Recoinage (12).
