William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, Norwich, Shillings (3), 1696 N, first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, N below, rev. crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, nine billets, edge obliquely milled, 6.00g, 6h (Bull 1184; ESC 1085), fine; another, 1697 N, similar, the stops not distinct but present, rev. six strings to harp, eight billets, 5.71g, 6h (Bull 1185; ESC 1099; Spink 3501), a heavy scratch in third quarter of reverse, rubbed, otherwise fair, scarce; lastly, 1697 N, third bust, rev. seven strings to harp, eight billets, 5.65g, 5h (Bull 1188; ESC 1106; Spink 3509), scratched in second quarter of reverse, otherwise heavily circulated and toned, scarcely good, but scarce; a small but important academic group of this elusive provincial mint (3).
