George III (1760-1820), Emergency Issues (1797-1799), Oval-Countermark Dollar (8-Reales), 1790-IJ, Lima, with a 'Devil Horn' flaw, laureate and draped bust of Charles III [in the name of Charles IV] right, oval countermark of George III in centre, rev. crowned square-topped shield dividing pillars, security edge, 26.08g, 12h (cf. Áureo & Calicó 297, 18 October 2017, lot 1686 same obverse die; Bull - [A/2]; ESC 133), a large die flaw projecting from the back of King Charles' head giving the impression of a 'Devil's horn', the host coin rubbed and bagmarked, about fair, the countermark similar, scarce; another, 8-Reales, 178[?]-PR, Potosi, similar, security edge, 25.45g, 12h (Bull 1855; ESC 131; Spink 3765A), heavily polished and worn, bruised and with 'JJ' engraved in floral script above countermark the host coin very poor, the countermark fine, a scarcer mint; another, 1795-PR, Potosi, removed from a brooch with remnants attached, the surfaces blistered and polished, poor (3).
Bull illustrates this type on page 263, but he omits it from the listing.
