France - ½ Louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes 1703, Gold, LOUIS XIV 1643–1715 Paris mint. Laureate head right. Rev. eight 'L's crowned and cruciform, scepters in angles.Dupl. 1444; Ci. 1806; Gd. 241 (R4); Fr. 437.Struck over Écu d'or of Louis XIII (Gd. 55; cf. Ci. 1593; cf. Dupl. 1282).
The mint mark escallop was used for both the Paris and Lille mints in 1703. With the mint letter illegible on this piece it is therefore difficult to differentiate between the two mints. An example from the Paris mint, recently auctioned and the only example on CoinArchives, is struck from the same dies, thus confirming our attribution to the mint of Paris.3.27 g. RRR.
