While it was argued by Robinson that these coins was struck by the Lucani at Metapontion contemporaneously with the half-shekels struck under Punic rule which they closely resemble, Johnston convincingly casts doubt on this attribution. She argues that the issue imitates two types which were well-dispersed throughout the region; the barley grain of Metapontion and the helmeted Athena of Tarentum.
