This fantasy is the same type as one listed in the extensive and important collection of Thomas Howard, 8th Earl of Pembroke (1656-1733) which was sold by Sotheby's in 1848. It was acquired by E. H. Bunbury who argues, in agreement with the Sotheby's catalogue, that such false denarii were created to answer an increased desire to possess items related to Roman history during the revival of interest in the classical world during the Renaissance.
