Seleukid Empire, Antiochos IV Epiphanes Æ 17mm. Epiphaneia, 175-164 BC. Diademed and draped bust to right / Artemis standing to left, drawing arrow from quiver and holding bow; EΠΙΦANE[ΩN] to right, [...]TO[...] to left, monogram(?) to upper left. Unpublished; cf. SNG BnF 2392 and SNG Levante 1805-6; Leu w12, 592 (hammer: 750 CHF). 3.50g, 17mm, 11h.

Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare; seemingly the second known example.

From a private European collection.

This extremely rare issue appears to have been struck at Epiphaneia in Cilicia, a city which was refounded during the rule of Antiochos IV Epiphanes. The city was formerly known as Oiniandos and was one of many poleis to be renamed after the epithet of the Seleukid ruler (see SC II p. 43). Another issue of the same type and of much the same fabric is known to have been struck at Epiphaneia but bearing a portrait of different style (or a different portrait altogether, see references). The ethnic on that issue clearly reads EΠΙΦANEΩN THΣ IEPAΣ and bears the Aradian era date Θꟼ (99 = 161/0 BC) in the outer left field. The portrait has been variably identified as Alexander the Great (SNG BnF) and Antiochos IV (SNG Levante) however the existence of this issue suggests it may in fact be that of Demetrios I (162-150 BC). It has not been possible to fully determine the reverse legend of the present issue however it has been suggested that it might read EΠΙΦANEΩN ETOYΣ with the position of the Greek numeral date being off flan (see Leu catalogue entry).
