William III (1694-1702), Bristol Shilling, 1697, first laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right, B below, rev. no stops after MAG FRA and HIB, four crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, eight billets, obliquely milled edge, 5.99g, 6h (Bull 1161 [R4]; ESC 1095; Spink 3498), weak to peripheries and superficial scuffs, otherwise nicely toned, a bolder very fine.
For Bristol, ESC 1095 rates the 1697 first bust as scarce. Bull clearly reckons the coin to be much rarer than this, though just how rare he is not sure. He therefore gives it R4? However, he also gives the wrong Standard Catalogue reference for this coin, and so perhaps there is some confusion.
Estimate: £100 - £150
