Charles II (1660-1685), Shilling, 1675 over 4, third laureate and draped bust right, rev. no stop after HIB, four crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, obliquely milled edge, 5.98g, 6h (Bull 531/534; ESC 1043A/1045; Spink 3380/3375), lightly polished and with scratch through face, otherwise the reverse toned, a bolder fine/very fine, a previously unrecorded die muling, unpublished and presumed excessively rare thus.
The second bust issues for 1675 as delineated by Bull include the Welsh Plumes issue (Bull 532 / ESC 1046); the plain issues including the virgin date (Bull 533 / ESC 1044), the 1675 over 3 (Bull 535 / ESC 1045A) and the 1675 over 4, with no stop after HIB (Bull 534 / ESC 1045) which is rated as R6. The third bust is also adopted for 1675 strikings, with Bull attributing a virgin date (Bull 530 / 1043 [R6]) and the 1675 over 3 (Bull 531 / ESC 1043A [R3]). The third bust has not previously been recorded with the 1675 over 4 overdate, but given the opportunity for muling it is not an especially surprising discovery coin. Nevertheless it is an important and exceedingly rare variety addition to the corpus, and given the established rarity of both the overdate and the third bust for the issue at large, an attribution of at least R6 would appear conservative. The Annual standard catalogue, similarly wants records of this important variety.
Estimate: £600 - £1,000
