Charles II (1660-1685), Copper Pattern, presumably for a Shilling (or possibly a Farthing), 1663, by Roettiers, first laureate and draped bust variety right, rev. MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX., four crowned emblems cruciform, date between two crowns, HI for HIB, milled edge, 6.16g, 6h (Bull 562 [R4]; Peck 488), slightly wavy flan and edge nick, only fair, but very rare.
Peck gives a good explanation of these pattern Shillings. There are two distinct varieties, one with the date divided by the crown above the rose, known in silver and copper (Peck 486 and 487), the other with date wholly between two crowns, known only in copper (Peck 488) as here. He illustrates both varieties.

Unfortunately ESC 1067 (silver), and 1067A (copper) describes the second variety, presumably in error since it does not exist in silver. The error is compounded by the illustration, which is of the first variety! Bull, quite rightly, follows Peck and so correctly describes all the varieties. He also follows Peck in giving a lower rarity grading to the second type. Peck gives EXR to Peck 486 and 487 and R to Peck 488. Bull accordingly gives R6 to the first type and R4 to this second type.

Bull tries to reconcile the ESC references. He describes the first type, in silver and copper, and gives them ESC 1067 / 1067A, which makes sense, and then creates a new reference 1067B, for the second type, which is this coin. So far so good. Unfortunately he then uses 1067A again for an example of this second type in copper-nickel. Presumably he should have used 1067C. He then goes on to list a mule of these two 1663 reverses, which he says is Peck 489, but in Peck this double reverse coin is not dated 1663 but 1676!
