FRANCE: Louis XV, 1715-1774, BI 2 sols (sous marqué) (2.04g), 1743-A, KM-500.1, Vlack-22, 2nd semester issue, light porosity, some damage on margins, VF, RR, ex St. Geran shipwreck. According to Robert Vlack, "Specimens examined indicate they were part of a hoard recovered from the French frigate St. Geran, that sunk during a gale when it struck shoals en route to the Île de France (Mauritius) on August 17, 1744. Off the 181 persons on board, only eight crew members and one passenger survived by clinging to loose boards, after the life boats were crushed by the falling masts. The ship was carrying 50,000 piastres of silver. These details were from the court of inquiry. The wreck was discovered and salvaged in the 1950s by a team of divers. The recovered coins show salt water erosion."Large shipments of these coins were made to Quebec and Cape Breton through 1756.

Estimate: 70-100 USD
