Japan ND (1872) P-7 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 10 Yen
From the first series of Japan, and a very challenging note that rarely becomes available at public auction in any grade, let alone in problem-free XF as seen here. After Japan slowly opened itself to the outside world after the visit of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 it would take another twenty years until the Ministry of Finance issued its first banknotes for general circulation. Offered here is a pleasing example of the 10 Yen of that first series, an appealing note that is seldom available in such lofty grade.
