The Acquittal of Admiral Keppel. Æ Medal (3333mm, 17.73 g, 6h). By T. Lyng. Struck 1779. AUGUSTUS KEPPEL, uniformed bust right / Courtroom scene with judge seated right on dais; before him, figure standing left and trampling many-headed serpent; jury in background; in exergue, VIRTUS PRÆVALET. BHM 220; Eimer –. Brown surfaces. EF. Rare.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

Admiral Keppel fought for the British during the American War for Independence, eventually commanding the British fleet at the First Battle of Ushant against the French in July of 1778. While not technically a defeat for the British, their forces suffered far heavier casualties than the French and were forced to retreat. Keppel and his fellow admiral, Hugh Palliser, fought after the conclusion of the battle mostly due to party politics and eventually this led to a court martial for both men. Keppel was cleared of any misconduct, but resigned anyway. Palliser was also cleared. Keppel later went into politics rather than returning to a naval command.
