From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

The Greenwich Hospital School, now known as the Royal Hospital School, was founded and granted a royal charter in 1712 with the intent of educating and improving the situation of the orphaned children of sailors. Located as it was on the grounds of the Greenwich Hospital, it over time became a major center of navigational and maritime education. The campus relocated to Holbrook in 1933.

The cataloger of St. James 49, lot 1251 noted that the earliest Greenwich Hospital School prize medal that they had encountered was dated 1838. This example pushes the date back to at least 1834.
