Henley Royal Regatta, 1912, Ladies Challenge Plate, AR Prize Medal awarded to Sir Harold Lister Farquhar (No.4) in the Winning Boat (Eton College), ISIS ET TAMESIS, the jugate busts of Isis and the Thames left, rev. HENLEY REGATTA ESTABLISHED 1839 LADIES CHALLENGE PLATE inside wreath, H. L. FARQUHAR - 1912 engraved on edge, 62g, 46mm., unsightly edge bruise at 8 o'clock, otherwise toned and brilliant, extremely fine to as issued, of historic and rowing interest, with accompanying plan documenting the team, their respective weights and positions, all in Official Case of Issue.
The 1912 is famed in the Rowing annals, not least for being the last occasion on which the competition was watched in person by the King and Queen, George V and Mary of Teck arriving in the Royal barge. The Eton College eight of Dilberoglue, Napier, Beasley-Robinson, Farquhar, Boyd, Buckley, Scrutton, Hay and Cox, The Hon. G W E Elliott, truimphed over Radley College by three lengths in 7 minutes 20 seconds. Regrettably Lieutenant Augustus Dilberoglue would later be killed in action during the First World War, a campaign in which Lieutenant Harold Lister Farquhar, Coldstream Guards, late 2nd Lifeguards, was awarded the Military Cross for services in France and Flanders in the 1919 New Year's Honours. His later life would see further distinction in the diplomatic corps which would see his installation Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George for services as Ambassador to Sweden. He passed away in 1953. An Edward VI Gold Crown found on farmland near his Devon seat and handled by his sister, the legendary numismatist Helen Laura Farquhar, is offered elsewhere in this sale.
