Rwanda 15.5.1961 P-4a PMG Extremely Fine 40 500 Francs
Embossed overprint on Rwanda-Burundi Pick-6. An amazing offering that might not look all that special, as it first glance this looks like a typical Rwanda-Burundi 500 Francs, which by itself is a fairly scarce note, especially in nice problem-free condition. However, close inspection reveals an embossed overprint at right indicating that this note was issued by the Banque Nationale of Rwanda in 1964, after the short-lived currency union between the newly independent countries at ended. Lower denominations carry a handstamp, while the 500 Francs and 1000 Francs have the embossed overprint. Of these, the 500 Francs appears the least frequent at auction, with only one confirmed offering in the last 5+ years at public auction. Specialists know that this is one of the key notes from the country, and one that is surely missing from most advanced African collections. A rare opportunity and one we do not expect to repeat anytime soon.
