IVORY COAST: Republic, AE 2500 francs, 2007, KM-XE1a, Abolition of the Slave Trade Series - Quaker Abolitionist Wedgwood Seal, fantasy pattern essai in pure copper, mintage 30 pieces, PCGS graded MS66 RD. This design was developed by British potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood in 1787 and was used by abolitionist groups on both sides of the Atlantic. The Wedgwood design was used as a seal for the Quaker-led Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The design depicts a kneeling Black man in chains with his hands raised to the heavens; it is and is inscribed with the phrase "Am I not a Man and a Brother?" In 1828 a modified version of the medallion appeared featuring a kneeling woman slave and the phrase "Am I not a Woman and a Sister." This version was intended to specifically bring attention to the plight of enslaved women. Both versions grace several different types of late 18th century British halfpenny tokens and early 19th century American one cent tokens.Private pattern struck at the Patrick Mint. The mint began operating in 1972 and was known for striking mainly tokens until the mint was destroyed in the 2017 Tubbs Fire in the "Northern California Firestorm" along with 5,642 other structures in Santa Rosa, California.
