IONIA. Kolophon. Circa 450-410 BC. Tetartemorion (Silver, 7 mm, 0.36 g, 9 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right; behind head, vine with leaves. Rev. Monogram of TE (= tetartemorion) within incuse square. Milne, Colophon 32. Cf. SNG Kayhan 358 (without vine behind head). Toned. About extremely fine.
Milne notes in his catalogue of Kolophon's coinage simply that there is a symbol behind the head of Apollo, without further elucidation, and the example illustrated is not sufficiently clear to identify the symbol. On our coin we see what looks like three pellets, but an example from the same dies recently sold by Naumann shows the symbol to be a vine with leaves (see Numismatik Naumann 91, 5 July 2020, 1073).
