LYCIA. Oinoanda. Circa 200 BC. (Bronze, 17 mm, 3.66 g, 11 h). Draped bust of Hermes to right, wing above his ear, wearing taenia; kerykeion over left shoulder. Rev. Ares Tauropleites standing facing, holding spear in right hand and resting left on shield set on ground; to left, o/B. R. Ashton, "The Coinage of Oinoanda," NC 2005, p. 75, 4 (A1/P4). SNG Keckman 636 (same dies). Extremely rare - just six examples with the o/B control cited by Ashton, and this specimen far superior to any of the examples he illustrates. Extremely fine.

Ashton notes (p. 76) that the letters o/B in the left field of the reverse likely signify the issuing authority (o = Oinoanda), and the Greek numeral two (B). An identical figure of Ares as is seen on the reverse of this coin has also been discovered on a rock-cut relief which was discovered in the vicinity of Oinoanda. Colonists from Termessos Major in Pisidia, where there existed a cult to Ares Tauropoleites, founded Oinoanda.
