SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC. (Bronze, 15 mm, 3.91 g, 12 h), quasi-municipal issue, Hierapolis on the Pyramos (Kastabala). Diademed and radiate head of Antiochos IV to right. Rev. ΙΕΡΟΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ ΤΩΝ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΩΙ ΠΥΡΑΜΩΙ Eagle with closed wings standing left; above, monogram; in exergue, monogram. CSE 2, 321. HGC 9, 682 (R2). SC 1391.1b. Cf. SNG Levante 1561 (different monogram in exergue). Very rare. Dark green patina with light earthen deposits, and a particularly fine example from this mint which is noted for the crudity of its issues. Very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.

Antiochos IV's quasi-municipal issues from Hierapolis is noted for its extremely crude manufacture, with off-center strikes, dumpy, oblong flans, and very poor engraving being common features. This is quite exceptional in contrast to the manufacture of his quasi-municipal issues from other Cilician mints, which is often quite good. This coin, having reasonably good style and engraving, is a particularly nice example of this very rare issue, and is a very handsome piece.
